In the rapidly growing Dutch renewable energy market, the business case for energy storage installations is charging up fast. To highlight the current state of the storage industry, Solarplaza has listed the 5 largest energy storage facilities in the Netherlands.
The Dutch market boasts around 12 GW of PV and 8.5 GW of wind capacity. The management and further growth of these intermittent power sources are challenged by grid congestion issues and increased scrutiny of business models. Along with the drop in technology costs, these conditions have significantly strengthened the business case. Investors are welcoming its potential for diversifying risk and offering additional revenue streams. Moreover, updated regulations will remove double taxation and incentivize congestion management in 2022.
Located in the provinces Zuid-Holland and Flevoland, the five largest Dutch storage projects together deliver over 80 MWh of energy storage capacity. Three of them are connected to wind parks, while the other two are co-situated with hybrid solar & wind projects. The largest project in this overview - by a long shot - is planned to become operational by Q4 this year. Along with being the Netherlands’ biggest storage project, it will also be the first large-scale grid storage project in Europe to use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology, as claimed by technology provider Wärtsilä.
