March 24 (SeeNews) - Serbia's air transport sector has suffered 40 million euro ($43.2 million) damage so far from the coronavirus crisis, while initial estimates put the total damage to the transport and infrastructure sectors at about 110 million euro, infrastructure minister Zorana Mihajlovic said on Tuesday.
"The most affected segment since the crisis began is the air transport, suffering a direct damage of about 40 million euro," Mihajlovic said in a statement.
The infrastructure ministry is in direct contact with all companies in the construction and transport sectors which are invited to submit opinions and information about their current situation to help the government draft a realistic programme of measures to overcome the crisis, she noted.
Flag carrier Air Serbia suspended on March 20 passenger services due to the measures imposed by the Serbian government in an effort to limit the spread of the coronavirus disease. Last week, the Serbian government halted all international passenger flights at the Nikola Tesla airport in Belgrade and closed the Konstantin Veliki airport in Nisin order to limit the spread of the coronavirus disease in the country.
Serbia has so far confirmed 249 coronavirus cases and three deaths related to the disease in the country. Health minister Zlatibor Loncar announced on March 6 the first case of the coronavirus infection in the country.
