September 12 (SeeNews) - Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. said on Thursday it has been awarded two contracts worth 85 million euro ($93.7 million) combined for strengthening and protecting a stretch of seafront coastline from erosion in Romania and the United Kingdom.
The Netherlands-based Boskalis has acquired a contract in Romania from the Romanian Water Administration to preserve the coastline of Mamaia resort area, the company said in a press release.
For this project, Boskalis will dredge four million cubic meters of sand using a large trailing suction hopper dredger and replenish the beach over a length of seven kilometers to create a 100-meter-wide beach.
The protection project aims to prevent further coastal erosion and maintain a fixed coastline. It is part of a large European Investment Bank programme focusing on the protection and rehabilitation of coastal areas. Pre-construction works including the finalization of the design and engineering will begin immediately. The execution of the works will start in the first half of 2020 and will be completed in 2021.
In the UK, Boskalis has been awarded a contract by Portsmouth City Council to construct new sea defenses in Southsea near Portsmouth.
