November 11 (SeeNews) - Romania's incumbent head of state Klaus Iohannis won 36.65% of the votes cast in Sunday's presidential elections, below the 50% threshold needed for an outright victory, and will face former prime minister Viorica Dancila in a run-off vote, partial official results indicated on Monday morning.
Viorica Dancila, who is the leader of Social Democrat Party (PSD), came in second with 23.79% support, the Central Electoral Bureau, BEC, said on its website quoting data from all polling stations in the country and 90% of the diaspora votes.
Dan Barna, the leader of the opposition Union Save Romania Party (USR), was third with 13.99% of the vote, followed by actor and former MEP Mircea Diaconu with 8.95%.
Voter turnout stood at 47.66%. Nearly 18.2 million voters were eligible to cast ballots.
Romanians were choosing among 14 candidates for president.
The second round of the presidential elections is scheduled for November 24.
Iohannis, a former member of the National Liberal Party (PNL), has been serving as Romania's president since November 2014.
On October 10, the Social-Democrat government led by Dancila lost a no-confidence vote requested by PNL, which accused the cabinet of incompetence.
At the beginning of the month, Romania's parliament gave its backing to a PNL government led by Ludovic Orban in a vote of confidence.
