April 2 (SeeNews) - Romanian car maker Automobile Dacia, a unit of France's Renault, said on Thursday that it has decided not to reopen its Mioveni production plant in Arges county on April 5 as planned.

"In the context of the spread of COVID-19 virus globally and the development of the health crisis, Groupe Renault Romania, in agreement with its social partners, is extending the production halt at the plant in Mioveni," Dacia said in a press release, without setting a possible date for resumption of activity.

Dacia announced on March 18 that it is suspending production at Mioveni between March 19 and April 5.

Dacia employs 14,000 at the plant in Mioveni, data posted on its website showed.

Renault bought Automobile Dacia, an ailing state-owned Romanian company at the time, in 1999.

Dacia has topped the SeeNews ranking of the 100 biggest companies by total revenue in Southeast Europe in the last five years.

On Tuesday, Pirelli Tyres Romania, a subsidiary of Italy's Pirelli Group, too decided not to reopen its plant on April 1, as previously planned, due to the spread of the COVID-19 disease.
