March 8 (SeeNews) - Romanian border police said on Tuesday that 291,081 refugees have crossed the border from Ukraine since February 24, when Russia started its invasion of Ukraine.
Out of the total number of refugees who arrived in Romania, some 208,863 have already left the country to other destinations, the border police said in a daily note published on its website.
On Monday only, 29,636 refugees have crossed the border from Ukraine, out of whom 26,551 have left for other destinations.
According to interior ministry data published on Tuesday, 3,469 Ukrainian citizens have sought asylum in Romania. Asylum seekers can benefit from accommodation in the centers of the General Inspectorate for Immigration, where the occupancy rate is currently 66.2%.
During a visit at the Siret refugee camp on Saturday, president Klaus Iohannis said that no Ukrainian will be refused entry into Romania.
On Saturday, prime minister Nicolae Ciuca announced that authorities are establishing a hub for the distribution of humanitarian assistance to Ukraine in Suceava.
"We are convinced that this hub, which will be under the coordination of the Brussels authorities, will be able to facilitate and ensure the coherence of the whole effort being made to help Ukrainian citizens. The contribution of the Romanian authorities is a significant one," Ciuca said during a televised press briefing on Saturday.
Romania has a 600 km long border with Ukraine.
