February 19 (SeeNews) - Telecoms operator One Albania, controlled by Hungarian IT company 4iG, plans to significantly expand its optical fibre network to reach 450,000 urban households by 2026, One Albania’s chief technology officer Ilir Duka was quoted as saying by local media.
Currently, One Albania fibre network covers 245,000 households, or 55% of the addressable market, Duka told local news provider Business Mag.
The company is also looking to ease migration of existing customers from copper cable to the more advanced Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) fibre technology.
GPON is a high-speed broadband access technology that uses optical fibre networks to deliver high-speed internet, voice, and video services to residential and business users.
One Albania also aims to expand its business to business line of fixed services for government and private entities.
Last year, Hungarian group 4iG completed the merger of the country’s One Telecommunications and the country’s largest telecom network operator, Albtelecom, into a sole entity under the One Albania brand, following the acquisition of the Albanian companies in 2022.
The merger resulted in One Albania owning the largest fixed telecommunications network in Albania, Duka told local media at the time.
