March 4 (SeeNews) - A former Communist era military base converted into a modern NATO airbase opened in the central Albanian town of Kucove on Monday after an overhaul worth 51 million euro ($55.3 million), Albania’s defence ministry said.
The Kucove airbase will function as a base for two recently delivered UH-60 Black Hawk military helicopters funded by the US, three Bayraktar TB2 combat drones acquired in 2022 with Turkish support, as well as more aircraft in the future, defence minister Niko Peleshi said, as seen in a video posted on social media.
According to the Albanian Armed Forces website, the addition of the two Black Hawk helicopters in January brought to ten the total number of aircraft in the Albanian air force.
Albania joined NATO in 2009.
