April 30 (SeeNews) - Chinese telecommunications equipment and services company Huawei plans to launch a smart city pilot project in Nis, in eastern Serbia, the mayor of Nis, Darko Bulatovic, has said.
The project includes the construction of urban infrastructure and the development of an information system to enable the implementation of services improving the life of Nis citizens, Bulatovic said in a video file posted on the website of news agency Tanjug on Saturday.
"A study will examine seven different services and we will define three of them which we will develop. We will most likely choose the smart city lighting service which is very important as it will allow a reduction of costs and improvement of urban mobility," Bulatovic said.
A Huawei technical team will visit Nis next month, trade minister Rasim Ljajic said in a separate video file posted on Tanjug's website on Saturday. "The project will improve the functioning of the local self-government and we wish to expand it to other cities and municipalities in Serbia."
The launch of the project was agreed on the sidelines of the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing.
Last week, Serbia's government said Huawei plans to establish a digital transformation hub for the Western Balkans in Serbia, providing a platform for the development of local ecosystems in the field of digital transformation in the public, financial, education, energy and transport sectors.
