February 12 (SeeNews) - The European Commission said on Wednesday it decided to open an infringement procedure against Croatia because of its failure to report its progress towards meeting the national energy efficiency targets.
Croatia was obliged to submit its 2019 annual energy efficiency progress report to the Commission by April 30, 2019, but has failed to do so, the EC said in a statement, noting it has sent a letter of formal notice to the Croatian authourities, thus launching the infringement procedure.
"Without the report, the European Commission cannot assess Member States' progress, both individually and collectively, towards the EU 2020 energy efficiency targets," the Commission said.
"Having an incomplete picture also prevents the European Union from adjusting, if necessary, its policies and measures to achieve the common energy efficiency targets, which are essential in our fight against climate change," it added.
The Adriatic country now has two months to send its reply to Brussels. If it fails to do so, the Commission may decide to send a reasoned opinion.
