October 10 (SeeNews) - Bulgaria's regional development ministry said that the European Commission has approved a 107.3 million levs ($63.2 million/54.9 million euro) grant for the second phase of the Sofia integrated public transport project.
The project envisages upgrade of tramway infrastructure, traffic management and passenger information systems, as well as purchase of 13 new low-floor articulated trams, the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
The total estimated value of the project is 125 million levs, the ministry said.
The EU funding will come from the European Regional Development Fund under Operational Programme Regions in Growth 2014-2020
Overall, the EU has invested 1 billion euro in Sofia's urban transport since Bulgaria joined the bloc in 2007, according to data from the European Commission.
