March 19 (SeeNews) - The European Commission said on Tuesday it has approved almost 39 million euro ($36 million) in financing from its cohesion fund to improve the wastewater collection and treatment system in Velika Gorica, northern Croatia, which will benefit both the local population and the environment.
The project will receive an additional support of 11.3 million euro from the cohesion fund before its overall conclusion, scheduled for the spring of 2027, the Commission said in a press release.
The project involves the construction of 106 kilometres of gravity sewer, 18 kilometres of pressure sewer and 39 pumping stations. The upgraded system will benefit close to 76,000 inhabitants that are already connected to the system or are ready to connect.
This investment will put an end to the dangerous hazards caused by the current system's inability to handle existing flows, which results in untreated wastewater being discharged into a nearby local river.
The new sewerage system will also ensure that the area's wastewater complies with the EU legislation for urban wastewater and water quality and quantity.
