February 27 (SeeNews) - Serbia’s government said it signed an agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development’s (EBRD) for a 3 million euro ($3.3 million) grant for the introduction of renewable energy sources (RES) in district heating systems across the country.
The total cost of the project is 40.5 million euro, of which 10.5 million euro are grants. It includes the introduction of RES in the district heating systems in ten local governments, energy minister Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic was quoted as saying in a press release on Monday following the signing of the agreement in London.

“By implementing the projects we are planning, in cooperation with the EBRD, we would double the production of thermal energy from RES, with a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions,” said Djedovic Handanovic.
In December, the EBRD approved a new country strategy for Serbia, focusing on green energy, SMEs and sustainable infrastructure.
