May 23 (SeeNews) - Croatian privately-owned natural gas trader Prvo Plinarsko Drustvo (PPD), part of local investment group ENNA, said on Monday it has won a procedure to rent additional capacities on the LNG terminal on the Croatian island of Krk.
“PPD is renting capacities on the LNG terminal on Krk since 2020. By expanding its capacities in line with a procedure set by the terminal operator and meeting all of the envisaged demands, we applied to rent out additional capacities and we rented them as of October 2022, or from the next gas year,” ENNA's head of corporate communications Dorotea Lazanin Jelenc said in an email to SeeNews. She did not elaborate on the details of the offer.
According to Slovenian and Croatian media reports, Slovenian gas wholesaler Geoplin lost the tender for the additional capacities on the LNG terminal, thwarting Slovenia's efforts to deal with a potential energy crisis that could occur in the autumn if the war in Ukraine continues and the EU does not lift the sanctions against Russia.
The LNG terminal on the island of Krk started operating in January 2021. It delivers gas to the Croatian national transmission network, which is connected to fellow EU member states Slovenia, Italy and Hungary, as well as to non-EU members Serbia and Montenegro.
In March, the Croatian prime minister Andrej Plenkovic announced plans to increase by 12% the regasification capacity of the LNG terminal in line with Europe's goal to reduce its energy dependence on Russia.
In April, LNG Hrvatska, the operator of LNG terminal on the island of Krk, said it has boosted the terminal's regasification capacity to 338,000 cubic metres per hour, equal to 2.9 billion cubic metres per year and said that it will offer a new free regasification capacity in accordance with the rules of operation in the annual capacity booking procedure for the gas year 2022/2023 and the following gas years, as well as the short-term regasification capacity in the short-term capacity booking procedure from May 1 until the end of the current gas year.
