April 3 (SeeNews) - The number of people who died from the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Croatia has increased by one to eight, while the number of confirmed infections increased to 1,079 as of midday on Friday, up from 1,011 a day earlier, the Croatian Institute of Public Health, HZJZ, said.

At the same time, the number of those who have recovered from the disease rose to 92 from 88, HZJZ said in a statement posted on the government-run website created to monitor the virus spread in the country.

A total of 39 patients have been put on assisted lung ventilation, it added.

The figures are based on the test results of 9,250 people.

As of last week, the Croatian government has barred people from leaving their place of permanent residence in an attempt to slow down the further spread of the virus.

The working hours of shops in Croatia have been reduced and they are now open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Public transport has been halted for 30 days, parks and outdoor sports centres were closed down and new rules were introduced for marriages and funerals.

Croatia has also banned public and religious gatherings and sports events for 30 days, closed its borders and shut down all restaurants and non-essential shops.

The first person to test positive for COVID-19 in Croatia was registered on February 25.
