April 22 (SeeNews) - Bulgaria's general government sector reported a deficit of 3.45 billion levs ($1.88 billion/1.76 billion euro) in 2023, equal to 1.9% of the year's gross domestic product (GDP), the statistical office said on Monday, citing preliminary data.
The deficit in the central government sub-sector stood at some 3.38 billion levs, or 1.8% of GDP, the National Statistical Institute (NSI) said in a data release.
Bulgaria's government debt amounted to 42.38 billion levs at the end of 2023, equivalent to 23.1% of GDP.
This was the second-lowest government debt to GDP ratio in the EU, preceded only by Estonia with 19.6%, data published separately by Eurostat on Monday showed.
The government debt to GDP ratio in the EU stood at 81.7% at the end of last year, while the same ratio was 88.6% for the countries in the eurozone, according to Eurostat.
