June 16 (SeeNews) - The Romanian unit of British American Tobacco (BAT) holds a share of over 50% of the local tobacco market, it said on Friday without elaborating.
BAT Romania exports around 70% of the output of its factory in Ploiesti, in the south of the country, the company said in a press release.
The factory, the company's second largest production facility in Europe with some 1,000 staff, has so far absorbed more than 500 million euro in investments, it added.
Romania exported tobacco products worth 1.48 billion euro ($1.62 billion) in 2022, up by 140 million euro from a year earlier, BAT also said, quoting official statistics. Tobacco products represented 43% of Romania's exports of food, drinks and tobacco products in 2022.
BAT employs more than 50,000 people worldwide and its brands are sold in more than 200 markets. Present in Romania since 1998, the company employs some 3,000 people.
