Holidays in Bulgaria
click to show large imageclick to show large image

Bulgaria has seen a consistent rise in tourists over the last few years; in part as a result of its cheaper property prices which is seen as a great investment to developers. But whilst it continues to flourish, it is perhaps fair to say that a large proportion of holiday makers still know very little about the country and what it has to offer as a holiday destination.

Part of the Balkans in South Eastern Europe, Bulgaria borders five other countries including Romania, Serbia, Republic of Macedonia, Greece and Turkey. It is still largely considered to be one of the classical regions of the world, steeped in old European culture. Perhaps its most notable feature is its diversity in landscape which ranges from the snow-capped Alpine Peaks in Rila, Pirin and the Balkan Mountains, to the sunny Black Sea coast. As any Travel Agent will tell you, this makes Bulgaria a hot spot for a variety of sporting holidays.

The leisure industry in Bulgaria boasts an all-year-round menu of sporting activities; with a heavy snowfall in winter, conditions are idea for skiers and snowboarders alike and the summer months see an influx of tourists wanting to try out the many water sports on offer along the Black Sea coast. Owing to its low salt content, the Black Sea is ideal for swimming, but water-skiing, sailing, surfing and kite boarding are also popular as well as white-water rafting, canoeing, and kayaking along the Rivers Arda, Ossam, Stackevska, and the quieter waters of the Danube.

Much of the Black Sea coast is covered by fine, white sandy beaches and not only is the sea non-tidal and less salty, but is generally warmer than the Mediterranean. However, if you are looking for a holiday destination that offers more than just a beautiful coastline, Bulgaria offers plenty of other attractions.

Bulgaria is home to some of Europe`s finest Greek, Romanian, Byzantine and Turkish styles of architecture. The capital city of Sofia is home to many museums, art galleries, opera houses and churches – the most famous of which is the gold-leaf domed Nevski Memorial Church.

The best time of year to visit will depend on the kind of holiday you want. January is considered the best time of year for skiing, and August is one of the warmer months for anyone looking to relax on the beach. The good exchange rate for Bulgaria means that there are plenty of affordable places to stay, including private lodges within the ski resorts and an array of city bed and breakfasts. Many of the hotels along the Black Sea Coast incorporate the famous mineral waters of Bulgaria, which have been widely recognised for their curative properties throughout the centuries - relaxing in one of the many mineral water spas should be a must do for any visitor.

In the 17th century, Croatian soldiers used to wear a little piece of cloth around their neck. In France, people were enthusiastic about it and adopted this fashion, calling the piece of cloth “de Croat” (of Croatians). That is where the actual name of “cravatta” (necktie) is deriving from.
