The Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) is a successor of the former League of Communists of Macedonia, which ruled the country in 1945-1990. SDSM ruled Macedonia from 2002 to 2006 when it lost the parliamentary elections by winning just 32 seats out of 120. After the election loss Radmila Šekerinska, former Foreign Minister, during whose term Macedonia gained a status of candidate country for European Union accession, was elected president of the party. It is the leading opposition party in the Macedonia’s State Sobranie.
