The Democratic Party was formed and recognized as a legal opposition group on December 1990. Pro-West professors, intellectuals, disgruntled government officials and students founded it. The party came to power for the first time in 1992 and its leader Sali Berisha was the first non-communist leader of Albania. The Democrats won the next ballots in 1996. A year later, they were ousted by the Socialists, following the mass riots (and threat of civil war) that accompanied the collapse of the pyramid schemes that had enjoyed widespread popularity. The Democrats are the leading party in the governing coalition since the 2005 parliamentary elections. It is an observer member of the European People's Party (EPP).
