LABOUR FORCE, Slovenia, AUGUST 2008

- In August 2008 the labour force in Slovenia numbered 940,489 persons, which is 0.1% less than in July 2008 and 1.9% more than in August 2007.
- In August 2008 the number of registered unemployed persons was 60,669, which is 1.4% less than in July 2008 and 11.5% less than in August 2007.
- In August 2008 the registered unemployment rate was the lowest in the Goriška and Gorenjska statistical regions (4.1%) and the highest in the Pomurska statistical region (11.4%).
- In comparison with July, in August 2008 the registered unemployment rate was unchanged and amounted to 6.5%. For men it was 5.4% (no monthly change), while for women it was 7.8% (monthly fall by 0.2 of a percentage point).

COMMENT

Fewer persons in employment in August 2008

In August 2008 there were 879,820 persons in employment in Slovenia, which is slightly less than in the previous month and 3.0% more than in August 2007. There were 790,946 persons in paid employment (slightly less than in the previous month and 3.1% more than in August 2007) and 88,874 self-employed persons (0.1% more than in the previous month and 1.5% more than in August 2007).

More men in employment, fewer women in employment

The comparison by sex shows that compared with the previous month in August 2008 the number of men in employment increased by 0.1% while the number of women in employment decreased by 0.2%. Compared to August 2007 the number of men in employment went up by 3.2% and the number of women in employment by 2.7%. Compared to the previous month, the number of men in paid employment increased by 0.1% while the number of women in paid employment decreased by 0.2%. In comparison with the previous month, the number of self-employed men increased by 0.2%, while the number of self-employed women slightly increased. In comparison with August 2007 the number of self-employed men decreased by 1.1%, while the number of self-employed women increased by 8.8%.

As regards activities, most persons in employment worked in manufacturing

In August 2008, 228,463 persons in employment worked in manufacturing (monthly fall by 0.2%), followed by 115,192 in wholesale, retail, certain repair (monthly fall by 0.2%) and 89,179 in construction (monthly growth by 0.5%). In terms of the number of persons in employment by activities, fishing, fish farming and related service activities employed the fewest people (220 persons in employment, monthly fall by 0.9%), followed by private households with 527 persons in employment (monthly fall by 0.4%) and mining and quarrying with 3,544 persons in employment (monthly fall by 0.3%).

Number of persons in employment lower in most statistical regions

Compared to July 2008, in August 2008 the number of persons in employment went up only in three statistical regions: in Savinjska and Osrednjeslovenska by 0.1% and in Obalno-kraška by 0.2%. In Podravska and Notranjsko-kraška statistical regions there were no monthly changes while in all other statistical regions the number of persons in employment decreased, the most in the Pomurska statistical region (by 0.3%).

Number of registered unemployed persons down

The Employment Service of Slovenia sends us the data on registered unemployed persons monthly. In August 2008 their number was 60,669, which is 1.4% less than in the previous month and 11.5% less than in August 2007.

Registered unemployment rate unchanged

In August 2008 the registered unemployment rate was 6.5%, the same as a month before. For men it was 5.4% and for women 7.8% (monthly fall by 0.2 of a percentage point).

Registered unemployment rate down in most statistical regions

In comparison with the previous month, the registered unemployment rate decreased the most in the Pomurska statistical region (by 0.3 of a percentage point; in August it was 11.4%). In the same period it decreased by 0.2 of a percentage point in the Podravska statistical region amounting to 8.8%. In six statistical regions it decreased by 0.1 of a percentage point while there were no monthly changes in the other four statistical regions.

Registered unemployment rate still the lowest in municipality Cerkno

The comparison of registered unemployment rates by municipalities shows that the lowest rates were recorded in Cerkno (1.4%), Bohinj (1.8%) and Zelezniki (1.9%) and the highest in Rogašovci (18.7%), Cankova and Kuzma (15.7%) and Dobrovnik and Velika Polana (15.6%).
