© Statistical Office of Slovenia

In the third quarter of 2008 the unemployment rate was 4.1% (3.9% for men and 4.4% for women). In the previous quarter the unemployment rate was 4.2% (3.5% for men and 4.9% for women).

The number of persons in employment up
In the third quarter of 2008 there were 1,023,000 persons in employment in Slovenia, which 33,000 or 3% more than in the previous quarter. The largest increase was registered among persons working via student employment services, which is quite logical since the third quarter is holiday time.
Distribution of persons in employment by sections of activity is relatively stable among the quarters. As usual, also in the third quarter of this year slightly more than a quarter of all persons in employment worked in manufacturing and almost 13% worked in wholesale and retail.

The number of unemployed persons up
In comparison with the second quarter 2008, in the third quarter of 2008 the number of unemployed persons increased by almost 1,000 (more than 2%) reaching 44,000. Almost seven out of ten unemployed persons lived in Vzhodna Slovenija. The unemployment rate in this region was 5.0%, while in Zahodna Slovenija it was 3.0%.
As usual, the unemployment rate was the highest among young persons, i.e. among those in the age group 15–24 years; it was 9.5% or 0.2 of a percentage point higher than in the previous quarter.

The number of inactive population down
In comparison with the second quarter of 2008, the number of inactive population decreased by 21,000 persons or by 3%. Inactive population is mainly composed of women; in the third quarter of 2008 there were 405,000 inactive women, which means that almost six out of ten inactive persons were women.

Comparison with the register data
In the third quarter of 2008 the number of persons in employment kept in the Statistical Register of Employment increased by slightly more than 2,000 or by 0.3% in comparison with the second quarter of 2008. The number of registered unemployed persons decreased by more than 1%. The registered unemployment rate decreased, too; in the third quarter of 2008 it was 6.4% or 0.1 of a percentage point lower than in the second quarter of 2008.

The 45 000 year-old Moustarian Bone Flute is the earliest preserved musicial instrument in the world...
The 45 000 year-old Moustarian Bone Flute is the earliest preserved musicial instrument in the world. It was discovered in the Divje Babe cave in Northwestern Slovenia. In 1995, Drago Kunej and Ivan Turk found a flute-like perforated thighbone of a young cave bear at the Divje Babe cave site in Slovenia. The finding originates from the final phase of themiddle Paleolithic period, about 35,000 – 50,000 years ago. Following the arguments of Kunej and Turk (2000), it seems to represent the oldest bone flute preserved up until now. It is beyond the scope of this paper to go into the discussion whether the finding is a flute or just a bone pierced by a carnivore in an abnormal way (a review on this topic is given in Kunejand Turk 2000).
