Sofia (Bulgaria), October 13 (SeeNews) - Slovenian and Croatian companies dominate a southeast Europe Top 100 ranking in terms of net sales revenue for 2007 prepared by SeeNews. A total of 23 Slovenian and 21 Croatian companies rank among the 100 best performers.

The see Top 100 ranking comprises the biggest non-financial companies in terms of net sales revenue in southeast Europe. It includes companies from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia.

This is the first ever regional ranking of companies in southeast Europe. It is based on extensive data collected, thorough research, company rankings in each state, SeeNews’ preliminary ranking of the companies for 2006 and a shortlist of 250 companies from the region prepared after a series of company updates.

SeeNews decided on the net sales revenue criterion as the most objective indicator of the economic strength and significance of a company not only within a country’s economy but also within the region of southeast Europe.

The ranking was topped by Croatian oil and gas company INA – Industrija Nafte, with a net sales revenue of 3.7 billion euro for 2007. INA explores and drills for oil and gas in Croatia, Angola, Egypt and Syria. It owns two refineries in Croatia and runs the biggest fuel retail chain in Croatia.

Romania’s largest oil group Petrom ranked second with a net sales revenue of 3.4 billion euro for 2007. However, a massive investment programme of 1.5 billion euro annually until 2010 and volatile economic environment have led to a fall in its net profit and sales. The group, majority-owned by Austria’s OMV Group, ended last year with some 490 million euro net profit, down 22% from 2006.

At No 3 position in the ranking, Serbia’s oil and gas monopoly, Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS) ended 2007 with net sales revenue of some 3.2 billion euro.

Slovenian blue-chip fuel trader Petrol ranked fourth with net sales revenue of 1.9 billion euro. The Bulgarian unit of Russian oil giant Lukoil, Lukoil Bulgaria, came fifth with a net sales revenue of 1.86 billion euro.

Apart from the Top 100 ranking of the companies in the region, SeeNews identified the five leading industries in the region of southeast Europe and the top 10 companies for each of them. Of primarily importance for the region, according to SeeNews, are oil and gas; power generation and distribution; telecoms; metals; and construction industries. They were selected after pooling the net sales revenue generated by the companies operating in one sector.

Following is a list of companies leading the industries rankings:

industry company Country
Oil and gas Ina – Industrija Nafte Croatia
Power generation and distribution JP Elektroprivreda Srbije Serbia
Telecom Orange Romania Romania
Metals Cumerio Med Bulgaria
Construction Slovenija Ceste Tehnika Obnova Slovenia

Another ranking prepared by SeeNews among 250 companies from the region of southeast Europe is the see Top 50 Per Capita, which puts the company’s strength and efficiency in a broader Business perspective.

Slovenian fuel retailer Petrol, which came fourth in the Top 100 ranking, tops the see Top 50 per capita. It generated a record high revenue of 963 euro per capita in 2007.

In addition, SeeNews prepared a see Country Top 5 ranking of the biggest companies in each country, again based on their net sales revenue for 2007.

The see Top 100 ranking is available on www.top100.seenews.com.
