SKOPJE (Macedonia), March 21 (SeeNews) - The Macedonian share indices closed mostly up this week, recovering from last week’s sharp falls, on optimistic political signals, brokers said.

The MBI index, tracking the 10 blue chips on the Macedonian bourse, gained 3.39% this week to 6,489.84 points on Friday. The bourse's broader index, MBID, which includes the shares of the 14 most liquid companies over a six-month period, lost 1.3% to 7,100.25.

“The indices started to recover in the middle of this week and rose on Thursday and Friday because foreign investors are again optimistic about the political situation [in the country]. The Democratic Albanian Party (DPA) said it would further support the ruling coalition until the NATO summit on April 2-4, also the United States gave some positive signals that Macedonia will get invitation to join the alliance,” Aleksandar Manev, a broker with Ilirika brokerage, told SeeNews.

“Next week will be crucial for the Macedonian bourse, as it will be known whether we will join NATO. And if we are invited, I think the indices will rise sharply,” he added.

Last week, DPA decided to leave the ruling coalition saying the government had failed to back legislation on the wider use of the Albanian language and flag in domestic events, to increase the number of ethnic Albanians in Macedonia's state administration and to recognise Kosovo’s independence. The withdrawal of DPA, which caused panic among investors resulted in an almost 10% fall in the blue-chip index last week,  leaves the 18-month old government of Prime Minister Gruevski with less than 50% support in the 120-seat parliament.

Total turnover on the Macedonian Stock exchange (MSE) slipped to 309.4 million denars ($7.9million/5.1million euro) this week from 312.7 million denars last week. Turnover on the bourse’s official market fell to 227 million denars from 298 million denars, while turnover on the unofficial floor surged to 82.2 million denars from 14.7 million denars.

The biggest blue-chip gainer on the MSE was steel mill Makstil which closed at 437 denars on Friday, up 11.2% from a week earlier. Makstil recorded the biggest blue-chip loss of over 18% last week.

Following are the closing prices of the MBI components on Friday:
