Popijac: Layoffs almost over

Croatian minister of economy Djuro Popijac believes the reasons that have led to a strong growth of unemployment early this year no longer exist. He emphasizes that the labor market is still recording a negative trend, unemployment is still on the rise, but the fact that 7,500 people were deleted from unemployment records in February is encouraging. The companies that resorted to laying off workers in order to cut costs have almost exhausted that mechanism; the market is recovering for our export companies, and the things being done by the Government for the economic recovery – together with an increase in consumption – should bring the final upturn, Popijac said. The press was also interested in the letter sent to Brussels, especially regarding the possible bankruptcy of Croatia’s shipyards. (Source: www.limun.hr original text was published on www.banka.hr)

Koncar building wind power plant outside Split for HRK 200m

Koncar will soon start building a wind power plant outside Split worth HRK 200m, the company announced at a media conference on Wednesday. After five years, the company has obtained the building permits and will invest HRK 80m in cash in the next few days, CEO of Koncar Elektroindustrija Darinko Bago said. Apart from that, the company will also borrow HRK 200m to cover the investment.Bago says this will be a new export product and a major investment. 80 percent will be Croatia made, as only the wings of the wind generator will be imported. Fifteen 1MW generators and one 2.5MW generator will be installed. Mr. Bago also reacted to the accusations coming from railway trade unions, about Koncar’s trains being too expensive. He stressed that the price of the three trains agreed with the Government is HRK 115m, which is as much as EUR 1m cheaper than the competition. The CEO says Koncar is selling its train engines in Serbia, Bulgaria and Macedonia, everywhere at the same price, and accuses HZ’s train drivers for 25 percent of all malfunctions.
