“I am confident that in April we will sign a Stabilisation and Association Agreement with Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is important not only to the European Commission but to all EU member states that Bosnia be part of Europe,” a statement by the presidency quoted Rehn as saying at a news conference in Brussels.
Signing a Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) is the first step to membership of the EU. Bosnia initialled the agreement in December and has to adopt key legislation unifying its ethnically divided police force before it can sign the deal.
“April is not far away, and we will do everything so that, after signing a SAA, we can obtain a candidate status as early as possible,” the presidency quoted its member Nebojsa Radmanovic as telling the same news conference.
Bosnia and Serbia are the only countries in southeast Europe which have not yet signed SAA deals with the EU.
