FOREIGN TRADE IN JANUARY IS 0.6% HIGHER COMPARED TO THE SAME MONTH LAST YEAR
According to the State Statistical Office, the Macedonian foreign trade in January is 0.6 % higher compared to the same month last year. The total value of export of goods from Macedonia in January 2010 is $186.95 million and import $319.961 millions. Import coverage by export was 58.4 percent, while the trade deficit was $133.011 millions. The biggest part of export have products of iron and steel, clouting, ferronickel and oil products, on the other side largest present of import takes crude oil, electricity and motor vehicles.
In January 2010, the largest participation of 68.5% in export of goods have EU member states followed by the Western Balkan countries with 27.1%. The import of goods have the largest participation in the EU member states with 47.2 %, followed by developing countries with 33.3 %. Macedonia mostly traded with Germany, Russia, Greece, Italy and Serbia. These five countries made 45.7 percent of total foreign trade.
INTEREST RATE REDUCTION - REQUIRE BUSSINESS COMUNITY
To coordinate fiscal and monetary policy with the aim of decreasing of the reference interest rate up to 6% until April, which would greatly help the economy. This was asked by the Executive Director of Macedonian Chamber of Commerce Mitko Aleksov, addressing the latest package of anti-crisis measures adopted by the government nowadays.
Liquidity of the enterprises is a major problem, said Aleksov, stressing that the conduct of a serious Business and requires support from the banks.
“Our proposal-request a harmonization of fiscal and monetary policy in the state, the reference interest rate to fall to six percent. The commercial banks still prefer to buy treasury bills with interest rate of 7.5% except to place loans in the economy”. - said Aleksov.
5 PERCENT CUSTOM DUTY FOR ALL AUTOMOBILES
The same customs duty will be imposed on old and new automobiles that will be imported into Macedonia. Customs duty will thus amount to five percent of a vehicles’ value, regardless of technical performances.
This has been prescribed in the Amendment to the Act on Customs Tariff that was adopted by the parliamentary Budget and Financial Committee a few days ago.
"The customs duty rates have been completely equalized for passengers’ vehicles, and new as well as used cars will thus have the same customs duty of five percent," said Nada Stancevska from VMRO-DPMNE.
NO MONOPOLY FOR RAILROAD
Railroad traffic in Macedonia will be liberalized, as the staterun company lost its monopoly and a new transport company Delta Rail Cargo will start operating in Macedonia.
New owners announce competition in transport sector. At first, the company that is in 100-percent Macedonian ownership will focus only on goods transport, whereas later they also plan to expand their operation to transport of passengers.
Ivan Ilievski, owner of Delta Rail Cargo, says that they will start with a modest offer and see how the Business develops. He adds that now both railway as well as truck transport got competition and that the company will offer very low prices. investments of the company amount to some EUR 500,000. They plan to start operating already this month.
