General Information

Short term statistic show the evolution of economy in short term period. Those statistics can help in understanding the economic cycle and in short term provisions.

The renovation of methodology is done in cooperation between Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) and Statistics Sweden (SCB) through SIDA project.

Starting from first quarter 2008 the quarterly indices of economic indicators are calculated based on the renovated methodology.

The fields of coverage of this survey are: industry, Construction, Wholesale trade, Hotels, transport, Communication and for the first time there are included Informatics services and Architectural and civil engineering services.
The economic activities are classified by NACE Rev.1.1 classification.
The renovation of methodology has resulted as a request of now day’s development to improve the limitations criterions carried from the previous methodology.

This quarter the enterprises are selected by sample from the Business Register, based on the criterion defined according to the purpose of the survey, based on the manual and definitions of Eurostat Regulations.

To generalize the results at the level of total economy there are used the structural weights which have derived from the Annual Structural Survey of Enterprises, (ASN) carried on from INSTAT in 2005. These weights will be kept unchanged for five years.

In order to eliminate price effects, the turnover indicator is deflated with respective price indices of each activity. indices are calculated with base year 2005=100. The indices of short term indicators are revised for the time series: first quarter 2003 – first quarter 2008.

For the first time there are calculated the Volume Production indices of industry in total and in its branches as Extracting industry, Manufacturing industry and Electricity steam and water. Also, for the first time are published the main indices for Whole sale sector. This activity is included in survey since first quarter 2005.

For Informatics service and architectural and civil engineering works, in the first quarter 2008 will published only the turnover indicator.

*From June 2007 private enterprises have applied the decision of the Council of Ministers no.285, date 04.05.2007, for “Definition of referred wage for the calculation of social and health insurance and the tax on personal revenues classified by NACE for the employed in the non public sector, that do qualified and non qualified jobs as well as for the administrative and economic -technical personnel.

Turnover volume estimated with fixed prices with base year 2005=100, in the second quarter 2008 is increased by 3.5 percent, compared with the second quarter 2007. Compared with the previous quarter the increase is 16.1 percent.
The volume of industrial production is increased 30.4 percent in the second quarter 2008 compared with the second quarter 2007, while compared with the first quarter 2008 increased by 7.5 percent. This increase is higher in the production of Extracting industry (36 percent) followed by the increase of industrial production in Manufacturing industry and Electricity, gas, steam and water supply sector, respectively 8.7 percent and 3.5 percent.
The number of employees in industry is increased by 7.2 percent in the second quarter 2008, compared with the second quarter 2007, while wages paid is increased by 22 percent during the same period. Compared with the previous quarter, the number of employees shows a slight decrease by 0.3 percent followed by the increase of wages by 1.9 percent.

Section C: Extracting industry

In the Extracting industry in the second quarter 2008 the turnover is increased by 50.8 percent compared with the first quarter 2008. This increase is mainly from sales of petroleum and chrome. While, compared with the same quarter of the previous year the increase is 2.8 percent.
In extracting industry, the volume of industrial production is increased by 39.1 percent during the same period. While compared with previous quarter the increase is 36 percent.
Number of employees in extracting industry, during the second quarter 2008, shows a slight decrease by 0.4 percent, compared with the first quarter 2008, while the wages paid increased by 2.4 percent during the same period. Compared with the same quarter of 2007, the number of employees and the wages paid is increased respectively by 10.5 percent and 20.5 percent.

Section D: Manufacturing industry

In manufacturing industry, the turnover estimated with fixed prices increased by 4 percent from second quarter 2007 to second quarter 2008. While in the second quarter 2008 compared with the first quarter 2008 the increase is 20.6 percent. The increase of turnover is higher in Manufacturing of Food, Beverages and Tobacco (30.2 percent), Manufacturing of Chemical, Plastic, Refinery. (48.4 percent) and in Manufacturing of Siderurgy, Metallic products, Machinery etc. (27.2 percent), while there is a decrease in Manufacturing of Wood industry (14.2 percent), Manufacturing of Furniture and other Industries (15.6percent).
The volume of industrial production is increased by 8.7 percent compared with previous quarter, while from second quarter 2007 to second quarter 2008 the increase is 13.3 percent.
The number of employees in Manufacturing industry is increased by 0.2 percent in the second quarter 2008 compared with first quarter 2008, while the wages paid is decreased by 0.6 percent during the same period. Compared with the second quarter of the previous year there is a decrease of the employees and wages, respectively by 6.9 percent and 19.9 percent.

Section E: Electricity, gas, steam and water supply

The volume of industrial production in Electricity, gas, steam and water supply sector, is increased significantly by 41.2 percent in the second quarter 2008 compared with the second quarter 2007. Compared with the previous quarter, the volume of industrial production is increased by 3.5 percent.
Turnover (sales), in Electricity, gas, steam and water supply sector, estimated with fixed prices compared with the same quarter of previous year, is increased by 2.8 percent, while decreased by 4.9 percent in the second quarter 2008 compared with the first quarter 2008.
The numbers of employees, in Electricity and water supply sector, decreased by 1.1 percent, while the wages in this branch increased by 8.2 percent during the same period. Compared with the second quarter 2007 number of employees and wages are increased respectively by 8.2 and 28.1 percent.

Construction

Turnover with fixed prices (deflated with the Construction Cost index), 2005=100, in construction sector is increased with 28.5 percent from the second 2007 to second quarter 2008. While compared with first quarter 2008 the increase is 27.3 percent.
The increase in civil engineering work is 113.5 percent compared with second quarter 2007, compared with previous quarter this indicator increased 51 percent.
The number of employees in Construction increased by 31.2 percent, from second quarter 2007 to second quarter 2008, while the salaries increased by 51.7 percent, during the same period. Compared with previous quarter those indicators decreased 1.7 and 3.0 percent.

Wholesale

In 2005 for the first time, in quarterly period, are surveyed economic enterprises operated in Wholesale Trade activity.
Turnover with fixed prices (deflated with the Production Price index), 2005=100, in wholesale.
Increased with 35.3 percent from the second 2007 to second quarter 2008, while compared with previous quarter this indicator increased 6.1 percent.
The number of employees in wholesale increased by 65.2 percent, from second quarter 2007 to second quarter 2008, while the salaries increased by 68.0 percent, during the same period.

Hotels

In the second quarter 2008 economic indicators as turnover and number of employees are introduced with a sensible increase, due to the beginning of tourism season.
Turnover estimated with fix prices in the activity of hotels is deflated with Concumer Price index, Only for this activity.
Turnover is increased by 45.8 percent in Hotel compared with first quarter 2008. The number of employees and wages are increased respectively 2.3 and 0.5 percent.

Other services

Starting from the fourth quarter 2007, in the sector of services are included also economic activities as Computer Services and Architectural, engineering Services. Compared with first quarter 2008, turnover in Computer Services is increased by 6.8 percent and in Architectural, engineering Services increased by 18.4 percent. While number of employees is decreased by 1.1 percent and 2.7 percent respectively. During this quarter, wages increased 14.2 percent in Computer Services, while in Architectural, engineering Services decreased by 5.6 percent.

Transport

Turnover estimated with current prices, in Railway Transport rose by 0.8 percent from second quarter 2007 to second quarter 2008. While, compared with previous quarter this indicator has increased by 20.5 percent.
Turnover estimated with current prices in Sea Transport is increased with 33.4 percent from second quarter 2007 to second quarter 2008. While, compared with previous quarter this indicator has showed decrease with 7.1 percent.
Turnover estimated with current prices in Air Transport increased by 24.5 percent from second quarter 2007 to second quarter 2008. While compared with previous quarter this indicator has showed light increase with 0.6 percent.
Turnover estimated with current prices in travel Agencies increased rapidly by 63 percent from second quarter 2007 to second quarter 2008. While compared with previous quarter this indicator has showed increase with 5.2 percent.

Post and Comunication

Turnover estimated with current prices in activity of post rose by 28.3 percent from second quarter 2007 to second quarter 2008, while turnover in activity of communication increased by 4.6 percent.
Compared with previous quarter this indicator in Post has showed increase with 16.1 percent, while in Communication it has decreased by 2.2 percent.
The number of employees in post activity increased by 6.9 percent and wages increased 20.4 percent, while in Communication the number of employees is increased 9.6 percent and wages 9.2 percent from second quarter 2007 to second quarter 2008.

The great Croatian humanist and inventor Faust Vrancic was the first ever parachute jumper.
