


































TIRANA (Albania), March 17 (SeeNews) - Albania’s Defence Minister Fatmir Mediu on Monday said he has resigned after a series of blasts at an army ammunition dump near Tirana killed people and caused widespread damage on Saturday.
The accident has killed at least 15 people and wonded around 300, Albanian broadcaster ALSAT reported earlier on Monday.
“I have placed my resignation as Defence Minister of Albania with Prime Minister Sali Berisha. This is a moral act, an act of responsibility,” Mediu told a news conference.
"I will support all kinds of investigation of the accident that have already been launched," Mediu said.
Mediu, 41, had been defence minister since 2005. He heads the Republican Party, a member of the coalition government led by Berisha.
A massive chain of explosions accrued in the ammunition dump located in the Gerdec village, some 10 kilometers from the capital Tirana, at 1045 GMT on Saturday. The explosions stopped on Sunday morning. More than 300 houses were destroyed and another 2,000 houses and Business premises were damaged in the accident.
